KAMPALA- UGANDA, April 20, 2023 – A team of brilliant scientists from Kyambogo University, led by Dr. Juliet Kyayesimira, is pioneering a groundbreaking approach to tackle antibiotic resistance in children using the power of plant.
The scientists are conducting ground breaking research into the benefits of Governor’s Plum (Flacourtia indica).
Antibiotic resistance, a global health crisis, is a growing concern in Uganda, as overuse and misuse of antibiotics, coupled with poor sanitation and hygiene practices, contribute to the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections.
Governor’s Plum, a plant that has been used in traditional herbal medicine for various ailments, including microbial infections, has shown promising antimicrobial properties due to its rich content of flavonoids, tannins, and other beneficial compounds.
The scientists at Kyambogo University are working diligently to develop a formulation that can serve as a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant infections in children.
“We are excited about the potential of Governor’s Plum to combat antibiotic resistance in children,” said Dr. Juliet Kyayesimira, lead scientist of the project.
“Our research shows promising results, and we are confident that this innovative approach could revolutionize the way we tackle antibiotic-resistant infections in Uganda and beyond.”
The team at Kyambogo University is committed to establishing the safety and efficacy of the formulation through rigorous scientific studies to pave the way for the commercialization of this breakthrough product.
“This innovative approach has the potential to not only save lives but also reduce healthcare costs and protect the future of our children,” added Dr. Kyayesiimira.
As antibiotic resistance continues to pose a significant threat to public health, this pioneering effort by Kyambogo University scientists offers a ray of hope.
With Governor’s Plum as their ally, they are on a mission to bring an end to antibiotic resistance in children and pave the way for a healthier and brighter future.
