Bushenyi, Uganda - In a significant step towards eradicating malaria, Uganda’s Health Minister Dr. Ruth Acheng has announced that the country has made remarkable progress in curbing the epidemic.
The declining malaria cases and effective mosquito net distribution programs show Uganda’s determination in combating the Disease
The latest research findings by the ministry reveal a significant reduction in malaria cases nationwide, thanks to the government’s tireless efforts and strategic initiatives.
According to the minister, the Ministry’s data shows the number of malaria cases recorded at Out Patient Departments (OPDs) in epidemic districts has dropped from 109,938 in March 2023 to the current 58,822, marking a substantial decrease of 46%. Admissions have also declined from 6,216 to 3,772, reflecting a decrease of over 40%.
She says the government’s commitment to fighting malaria is further demonstrated through a massive mosquito net distribution campaign, supported by the Global Fund and Against Malaria Foundation (AMF).
“With an ambitious target of achieving universal coverage, the government aims to distribute 28.5 million mosquito nets across the country. This initiative is aimed at reducing malaria morbidity and mortality rates,” she told the members of the press at the ministry’s headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday this week.
However, amidst these positive developments, cautionary measures have been emphasized. Residents of Bushenyi District have been urged to use mosquito nets appropriately and avoid misusing them for purposes other than malaria prevention.
The RDC Robert Atuhairwe stressed that mosquito nets are government property and should be handled with care to curb the spread of malaria effectively.
The distribution of mosquito nets in Bushenyi District has been well-received, with 150,802 nets allocated to the region.
Local leaders, including Jaffari Bassajjabalaba, the District Chairperson LC.5, have called on residents to use the nets solely for combating malaria and refrain from using them for activities such as fish catching or poultry keeping.
Robert Twesigye, in charge of Rutooma Health Center II, emphasized the importance of following government and Ministry of Health instructions on proper handling and use of mosquito nets for maximum effectiveness in malaria prevention.
The successful fight against malaria in Bushenyi District has been boosted by significant investments in healthcare infrastructure. The recently renovated Rutooma Health Center II, which received over 900 million Uganda shillings, has been upgraded to Health Center III status. The project, spearheaded by former CAO Willy Bataringaya, is considered a flagship government initiative in the district.
RDC Robert Atuhairwe expressed his gratitude towards Bataringaya for his unwavering commitment to securing government funds for the renovation of Rutooma Health Center ll. Atuhairwe also commended the former CAO for his efforts in lobbying funds for the refurbishment of Kanyamurere Seed School.
Naboth Muhereza, Mayor of Rwentuuha Town Council, provided an update on the ongoing project at Rutooma Health Center ll, which involves the construction of a new general ward, maternity ward, and two staff quarters. The project, which commenced on February 1, 2023, is currently 75% complete and is expected to be finalized soon.
With Uganda’s concerted efforts, declining malaria cases, and efficient healthcare infrastructure investments, the country is making significant strides in the fight against this devastating disease. As Uganda continues its commitment to combat malaria, the government’s initiatives serve as a beacon of hope for the nation and a testament to the power of dedicated efforts in improving public health.
